Several cases of election violence were recorded in Ebonyi State on Saturday, as hoodlums shot and snatched ballot boxes in some polling booths across state.

At the polling booth in Nwakpu Market Square, Ikwo Local Government Area, an unidentified man emerged from the bush and shot several times into the air.

Gov candidate, stakeholders want March 28 elections cancelled

The Labour Party governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Edward Nkwegu, has called for a cancellation of Saturday’s election in Ebonyi State, saying that many eligible voters were disenfranchised during the exercise.

Nkwegu lamented that the number of those accredited by the card readers were lesser than those not accepted by the machines.

“The most disturbing part is that only five incident forms were provided in the polling booth where I voted, while about 200 persons failed the accreditation by the card reader. So how are the rest of the people going to fill the forms?

“It would be proper if the elections were cancelled in areas where there were very severe cases of disenfranchised voters,” he said.

The Ebonyi LP governorship candidate expressed worry that the election may witness a large number of disenfranchised voters in other parts of the country.

Nkwegu, however, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to go ahead with the card readers but to work “assiduously” to ensure that the challenges were solved before April 11 governorship elections.

Meanwhile, political stakeholders in the state have alleged sabotage by the INEC in the distribution of election materials.

Commissioner of Education in the state, Chief Ndubisi Chibueze-Agbo, said that the INEC officials were supposed to arrive in Ohaukwu Local Government Area (Ebonyi North) zone by Friday evening, but they failed to do so.

“The electoral materials had not arrived my polling unit for instance, as at 10.am (Saturday) and the INEC officials brought a ‘GP tank’ on Friday instead of personnel and materials,” he said.

Chibueze-Agbo said he was suspecting sabotage from INEC. He said, “The main intention was to disenfranchise Ohaukwu people.”

Labour Party senatorial candidate for Ebonyi North zone, Chief Peter Oge-Ali, noted that voting materials brought to the area were mixed.

“Voting and result sheets were taken to areas they were not meant to be, and this is a serious sabotage from INEC,” Oge-Ali said.

The All Progressive Grand Alliance governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Senator Anthony Agbo, said that he was ready to take the matter to court.

Ohuabunwa decries card reader failure

The Peoples Democratic Party senatorial candidate for Abia North district, Chief Mao Ohuabunwa has decried the high rate of card reader failure in his Arochukwu Local Government Area.

Late arrival of ballot papers mars poll

Late arrival of materials and slow accreditation marred voting in parts of Abia State on Saturday.

While voting went on smoothly in some parts of the state, in other places, voters were subjected to long waiting after accreditation as ballot papers were not available.

Ngige refuses to vote, says process faulty

Senator Chris Ngige representing Anambra Central Senatorial District refused to vote on Saturday, claiming that the electoral process had been compromised.

Ngige, who is contesting for a re-election in the Senate, said he chose to waive his right to vote in the on-going elections when our correspondent met him at Alor ward 1, in his home town.

According to him, the poor working conditions of the card readers and the eventual usage of the manual system would lead to manipulations and other fraudulent electoral practices.

“When I came here, they just wrote my name in a piece of paper with some other names. My fingers were not marked with accreditation ink also. I complained to the INEC officials and they told me they were directed not to do so,” Ngige lamented, saying he was not going to be a part of a faulty election.

Majority of the card readers deployed by INEC did not work for hours into the election.

He said the elections should have been postponed after INEC realised that majority of the card readers were not working.

In a bid to check a possible crisis situation in the state, INEC directed all polling stations to revert to the manual process.

However, many candidates expressed worries when some polling stations later stopped the manual accreditation, citing orders from undisclosed authorities.

Ngige said INEC, by the rules, was supposed to have back-up card readers in the event of one failing. According to him, continual failure of card readers should justify a shift of the elections by the electoral body.

He said even President Goodluck Jonathan’s accreditation, which was done manually, should be disqualified by INEC.

The national chairman, All Progressive Grand Alliance and contestant for Anambra Central Senatorial zone, Chief Victor Umeh, said INEC messed up the electoral process by providing non-functional card readers.

He said, “As a result of this, voting was delayed for over five hours in most parts of the state.”

Card reader rejects Ekweremadu, wife

The card reader failed to accredit several registered voters in Enugu, including the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife.

Ekweremadu and his wife were among many prospective voters who were rejected by the card reader at a polling unit in Amachara Mpu Ward 010.

Inec have been forced to go manually

card readersThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria has adjusted the guidelines for the elections to address some of the challenges being faced during the accreditation process across the country.

The chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of the commission, Dr. Chris Iyimoga, told reporters that “where card readers fail to work, presiding officers can accredit voters by marking the voter register”.
He also said arrangements will be made for voting to take place tomorrow in polling units where accreditation was suspended.
In some polling units across the country, card readers failed to read the finger prints of voters, causing delay in the process that is supposed to last for at most five hours.

In Otuoke, the home town of Nigeria’s President and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Goodluck Jonathan, the card reader failed to authenticate the finger print of the President and his wife.

President Jonathan was made to fill the ‘Incidence Form’ before he was accredited manually by the ad-hoc staff of the electoral commission.

After waiting trying for over one hour, President Jonathan urged Nigerians to be patient with the INEC, saying everything that is being used for the first time will always have challenges.

Kano, Nigeria – Nigerians will vote in what is expected to be one of the country's tightest presidential races ever on Saturday, with a festering insurgency and rampant corruption high on the agenda.

#Nigeria decides

In all countries of the world, elections are characteristically preceded by a strong desire in the citizenry to know who would eventually carry the ballot. All the posturing, politicking, electioneering campaigns and last minutes actions of government can only  heighten the inquisitiveness of the electorate and other stakeholders.

I want to take this last opportunity, before we go to the polls on Saturday March 28 and April 11 respectively, to thank everyone who has supported our campaigns. I am humbled and grateful to have had the opportunity to meet so many of my fellow Nigerians who have helped to carry the message of change across our great country.

This is the fourth time that I would be standing for election as the President of Nigeria. All these years, I have been driven by a keen awareness of the potential greatness of our country and the desire to provide the true leadership that will unleash this huge potential. I believe that a stable and prosperous Nigeria is not only important to Nigerians. It is also important to Africa and the rest of the world. The evidence of this is the unprecedented attention that our country will receive this weekend. On Saturday, the whole world would wait with baited breath for the greatest black nation on earth to take charge of its destiny. We must therefore not miss the significance of this moment. We must not let ourselves and our country down.

At no other time in our history is Nigeria in such an urgent need of strong and competent leadership. Sadly, at no other time is this leadership so sorely absent in our country. We live in a time of great opportunities and great peril. It is only a leader that understands these in equal measure that can find the rightful place for Nigeria among the great Nations of the world.

I have travelled extensively around Nigeria in the last three months. In the course of my travels, I encountered directly, what I have always believed: that a Hausa man’s desire for security is not different from the Ijaw woman’s desire to feel secured in any part of our country. An Igbo woman’s desire for her children to get quality education and find employment is not different from the Yoruba man’s dream for his children to become a useful member of our society. A wife’s desperate need for affordable and quality healthcare for her husband diagnosed with prostate cancer in Enugu is not different from a husband’s desire to save the life of his wife diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Lagos. Invariably, our fears are the same; our dreams are the same; and our problems are the same. Regardless of the language we speak, or the way we understand and worship God, what affects anyone of us, affects everyone of us.

Our economy is celebrated as the largest in Africa, yet our country is home to the continent’s highest number of people living in extreme poverty. Our youth population is larger than the combined population of many of our neighbors, yet our failure to plan and create opportunities for them is turning them to a social time bomb rather than economic catalysts. A band of ragtag terrorist group has threatened our territorial integrity, killed thousands of Nigerians, displaced our people and abducted our children. The almost 60, 000 Nigerians who have become refugees in neighboring countries represent a budding threat to sub-regional stability.

However, even in the face of these daunting challenges, I see a great opportunity for change. We have to start by rebuilding the trust and confidence of Nigerians in their government. No citizen will respect a government under whose watch more than 200 girls were abducted. This singular act can only portray the government as insensitive, incompetent or both. When I become president, reuniting these children with their families will, without doubts, be a top priority. Rebuilding the army and other security agencies will also be a top priority of my government. I will ensure that never again will terrorists find a safe haven in Nigeria.

Recent fall in international price of crude leaves us badly exposed and vulnerable. Dwindling oil revenue also means that we are going to face serious financial challenges in the months ahead. However, even as daunting as this appears, it also provides us with great opportunity to diversify our economy a

I read the interview of Chief Ayo Adebanjo published in The PUNCH edition of Friday, March 20, 2015 on why he will not forgive Maj. Gen. While one must concede the Chief’s right to hold his view, the public is entitled to its own reaction to such views on a matter of public interest.
