10 things you can do apart from singing

These days, it feels there are more artistes than fans. Everyone has a song out, everyone is chasing the next hit. I believe in following your dreams and living your passion so this article isn’t here to kill your buzz. I do wonder though, do all the artistes we have and will have know that there are other ways of fufilling their passion via entertainment?
Check these out
 10. Collaborate
Not in the ‘alright stop/collaborate and listen’ way, but in the getting songs out there by getting others on a track. Think about it, since ‘Stylee‘, Nigerian Djs have been putting singles out (Jimmy Jatt and Xclusive especially, then there are people like Moby and David Guetta.
9. Produce
Producers are rockstars as well you know. Learn how to produce and make a couple of songs for others.
8. Hype
Every artiste needs a team, and one crucial member of the team is a publicist. When it comes to ‘hyping’, you can work as an independent brand, or work with a particular artiste or company. Check out brands like Black House Media and WePlugGoodMusic.
7. Teach
They say those who can’t, teach. Perhaps. But if everyone is doing and noone is teaching, how’s anyone going to learn? If you know how to play an instrument, try teaching others. There’s also, voice training, theory of music and more.
6. Critique
And no I do not mean ‘criticise’. Be a critique, that person whose review everyone waits for. Critique singles, albums, movies, television shows, radio shows and more. The food industry has critics that can make or mar a restuarant, you can be that for the entertainment world.
5. Be an Agent
We forget that agency is crucial in the entertainment world. Simply put, an agent gets bookings, gigs, sometimes auditions and appearances for an artiste. An agent is different from a manager as it is a less involved position. You basically say, I’ll get you this gig and get this commission.
4. Be an A and R
And A and R (artiste and repetoire) usually works with a label. Their duty is to develop and find talent. You may have a knack for spotting the next big thing in Fuji. So why don’t you?
3. Manage
Managers are an artiste’s best friend. A manager is like a boss, an employee, a friend, a shrink, a strategist, an agent, an ‘a and r’ and more rolled in one. So how many of you know that Godwin Tom who now manages Wizkid and Waje and managed M.I at some point, is actually a rapper himself? And of course, you may know some of the best managers in the business- Efe Omorogbe, Sunday Are, Jude Okoye, Osagie Osarenkhoe.
2. Report
Like music? Report it. Go for shows and cover them. Write reviews. Give news. Tell people all those fun facts you have. Music / Entertainment reporting is big business if done right. ’The Source’, Ryan Seacrest, Capital One.. These are some brands that thrive on entertainment.
1. Write
It is a shame that we spend more time criticising people for not writing their own songs, than accepting that song writing is an art and a career in itself. Today, I urge you to google ‘Diane Warren’.
Thank you.
With these ten points of mine, I hope I have been able to convince and not confuse you that a passion for the industry does not mean singing alone.
