A few days back, a buzzing bee said not everyone who dies of lung cancer
smokes. There was no way to argue, but research still shows that a
large percentage of cancer-related deaths are directly linked to
lifestyle choices, such as smoking, drinking, binging on junk food, lack
of exercise, etc.
Go Nuts For Nuts
If
you can start your day with nuts, then you have arrived, my friend!
Food habit focussing more on plant-based foods such as fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, nuts, pulses, etc gives you the much-needed
kick of anti-oxidants and other such multitude of beneficial vitamins,
minerals, fibre, and compounds. Fruits and veggies not only remove
toxins, but also neutralize carcinogens or prevent their formation.
This, in turn, boosts the immune system. Choose whole grain cereal for
breakfast or dig into a big portion of salad with vegetables.Snack on trail mixes (sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, almonds, walnuts, etc) during breaks at work.
A Whole Lot Better
Whole grain foods containing fiber are the key components that help in preventing cancer. Foods that are rich in fiber help
keep your digestive system clean and healthy and throw the
cancer-causing compounds out of your gut. Replace white rice with brown
in your food habit; eat fruits with skin, as whole foods not only
contain fiber but also phytonutrients that may reduce cancer risk.
Starch Glory
Starchy
foods are rich source of vitamins B, and they reduce the risk of
cancer. Include sweet potatoes, potatoes, yam, rice, pasta or any wheat
products in your daily food habit and see the difference. However, that
does not you have the allowance to OD on French fries or potato chips.
Ditch The Process
Original
is always better. The more churning and turning the food goes through,
the more it loses its natural nutrient value. For example, instead of
drinking orange juice (worse if it’s packaged), peel and eat the orange.
Similarly, avoid the oatmeal raisin cookie and have some healthy
porridge with raisins in the morning.
No Meaty Roles, Please!
No, we aren’t asking you to banish meat from
your diet completely. All you can do is cut down on red meat. A certain
research also claims that vegetarians are about fifty per cent less
likely to develop cancer than those who eat meat. That may be because
meat and milk lack fiber, antioxidants and nutrients that have cancer
protective properties. Meat is also high on saturated fat which is
linked with increased risk of cancer. Instead choose lean cuts of meat,
or better still, go for fish or lean chicken in your food habit as they
are low on fat.
Life and death are two extremes that no one can predict or change.
But we can always make an effort to make the best of our lives by being
healthy and eating healthy, so that we can keep the dangerous cancer
monster away for longer.
